JOIN THE WATCH PARTY!
Alright so, when we're not doing our home workouts, and otherwise being super productive with our time at home, what are we doing? BINGE watching shows on our favorite streaming platforms.
I'd like to think that I have been ahead of the curve on this one though. I've been bingeing on shows since before it was a googlable term. Actually, now that I think about it, my best friend Ashton and I were pretty much trendsetters growing up, spending many of our middle and high school years laid up in the bed, watching DVD after DVD of "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" and "One Tree Hill" with a pizza spread from Papa Johns. Yes, these were the days you actually had to watch a series, one DVD at a time.
Then came Netflix; but not the way you know it now. Still in the Iridescent Age of DVD, Netflix began as a mail order DVD service. With a membership, you could simply order your selection online, cutting the step of actually going to Blockbuster and renting movies or series, and have it delivered to your home. It was a mind-blowing innovation. Thinking back, what a brilliant move to bridge the gap between developing technologies and the way the market was doing business at the time. Consumers loved the convenience, and soon Blockbuster was offering a similar service.
In college, I had this Blockbuster subscription. My best friend Amber and I spent and entire summer on an antique couch (in other words, an upholstered pile of bricks) in my studio apartment in Charleston, binge watching a series that continues to captivate our conversations to. this. day. Our entire schedules were devoted to finding out what happened to Oceanic Flight 815; days became nights, episodes became seasons, we left the house only for the essentials and to switch out our DVDs, two at a time. Sometimes we went twice in a day. We now refer to this time period as The Summer of Lost.
While many of you are feeling uncomfortable in this state of forced relaxation, I can tell you there is nothing better than sitting back and loosing yourself in the stories of others. That's what entertainment is all about. I'm no Hollywood critic, but I'd like to think that 20 years experience binge watching series and documentaries is worth something.
So here's my Quarantine Streaming Playlist for the weekend of May 8th. I think you'll enjoy these picks! Comment with your favorites or suggestions! I'll be updating each week so let me know what you are watching also. Nothing is more important than our mental health, so find something that interests you and allow yourself to escape, even for just an hour at a time.

Hattie

The titles everyone's talking about...
Hollywood, Netflix
A Must See... especially if you have an affinity for The Golden Age. The glitz, glam, and secret love affairs that made the town of Hollywood what it is today. I love the way this series interweaves the stories of real Hollywood stars and fictional characters to put the spotlight on the challenges women and minorities faced not just breaking into the entertainment industry, but the struggles to live their truths through the lenses of society and the culture at the time. *If you don't know much about this era, I suggest reading up on a few key figures in the plot line so you can truly appreciate the writing and art direction of this production!
Secret Love, Netflix
A great follow up for Hollywood and a beautiful love story. One scene had the tears rolling, as you realize just how fleeting love is. If you have it, Never take it for granted, and Cherish it everyday. 'Nuff said.
Waco, Netflix
I love a good true crime drama miniseries, amirite? Throw in a cult and I'm there. No, in all seriousness, I'm only a few episodes in and it seems fairly accurate (based on the many documentaries I've seen on David Koresh and the Branch Davidians). It's interesting to see the context of the times. Coming off the Ruby Ridge incident, its easy to see in hindsight how the event snowballed. The 90's y'all. If you haven't already, definitely add this to the playlist. Well written, well acted, well directed. Let me know what ya'll think.
BBC
So you've probably caught up on the last available episodes of all our standards by now, so if you're like me, you've been looking for something new to spark your interest. Enter a new genre. BBC. Take a trip across the pond, and dive into one of these mind-boggling British dramas that will keep your fancy from beginning to end. *Seriously, we have nothing on these BBC productions. Keep the popcorn handy.
The Missing, Starz
The Dublin Murders, Starz
The Five, Netflix
Murder 'N the Morn'
I don't know about you, but I like to start my day with a cup of steaming hot tea, and a cold blooded murder. Since quarantine, I've knocked off every available episode of Dateline NBC and ABC'S 20/20 on Spectrum. Highly suggest as most are more than an hour long. I turn it on and listen as I do dishes, laundry etc. Basically like a podcast (I should try those, give me your suggestions). However, A Crime To Remember is worth the sit down. It's about true crimes that occurred in the past, before any type of modern forensic investigation tools were invented. Just good 'ol fashioned police work. I found it fascinating.
Dateline NBC, Spectrum
ABC'S 20/20, Spectrum
A Crime To Remember, Hulu
Throwbacks
Some series are like comfort food , no matter how many times you have it, it never gets old. Parks and Rec aired a new special for the times, which gave me all the feels. So of course I had to go back to Pawny, where it all began. Also, The Twilight Zone because, well we're basically living it. And Desperate Housewives, because I could never relate more.
Parks and Rec, Netflix
The Twilight Zone, Netflix
Desperate Housewives, Hulu
Classic Movie Night
What Lies Beneath
Starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer
*AS GOOD AS I REMEMBER. WORTH THE REWATCH.
