What are MACROS? When getting into shape there are two main things to really focus on: 1) Diet 2) Exercise. They both go hand in hand but if I had to stress the importance of one over the other, diet would win almost every time. This is one of the reasons why counting your macros is so important. While counting calories may help you lose weight, to achieve total health and optimum fitness you will need to look beyond the calories and recognize that all calories are not created equal. Counting Macros ensures that you get all the necessary nutrients to fuel your body throughout the day.
A ‘macro’ is short for macronutrient and it refers to the process of counting the EXACT amounts of carbs, proteins, and fats you consume throughout one given day. Let me break this down for you and tell you the importance of each macronutrient:
Protein: Having the right amount of protein daily will help build muscle and prevent muscle loss. Protein will help you stay fuller for longer and requires more energy for your body to digest which effectively burns more calories throughout the day. High-protein diets are great from fat-loss.
Carbs: Your body uses carbohydrates to make Glucose, which is your body’s main source of energy. Glucose is a type of sugar that can be used right away for energy or stored away to be used for later. A lot of people associate carbs with being ‘bad’. The right number of carbs is an essential part of your diet and should never be skipped!
Fats: Healthy fats are an essential nutrient that our bodies require to live. It assists in vitamin absorption, hormone regulation, and brain function.
Your Macro numbers will be different for everyone and is based on multiple factors such as: activity level, age, weight, and body fat percentage. You should never be depriving your body of anything. You are supposed to be feeding your body the ideal nutrition to help you get the results you desire.
